Background
There are a few different ways you might be using your phone number with IFTTT. It could be used for two factor authentication, the IFTTT phone call service, or the IFTTT SMS service. This guide explains how to update the phone number used for each one. Please note that updating the number for one service will not change the number used for the others.
For SMS two-step verification
As of 2023, IFTTT no longer supports SMS for setting up new two step verification. If your account had SMS-based two step verification enabled before that date it will continue to work, but you will not be able to update the phone number used. Instead, you can remove two step verification and then turn it back on using an authenticator app. Follow the steps below:
- Disable two-step verification by visiting your account settings page
- Under Two-step verification, select Disable two-step verification
- Enter your existing 6 digit verification code or 16 digit backup code, along with your password when prompted.
- Once two step verification has been disabled, you can turn it back on using an authenticator app by selecting the Enable two step verification button.
- Finish the setup process in your authentication app.
- 💡Note: Remember to save your backup code! If you lose access to your authenticator app, you won't be able to recover your account without it.
For Applets
Your phone number can be used with Applets that include a Trigger or Action from the Phone Call service or the SMS service. When you update the phone number for one of these services, all Applets that use that service will automatically use the new number. You will not need to make any changes to the Applets themselves.
If you need to update the number, follow these steps:
IFTTT SMS Service
- Head to https://ifttt.com/sms/settings
- Press the Reconnect button on the bottom of the page
- Enter your phone number in the Phone Number field and check the boxes covering IFTTT's terms and confirm you'd like to receive SMS messages from IFTTT, then press send PIN
- Check your phone and enter the 4 digit PIN into the Pin field then press update
IFTTT Phone Call Service
- Head to https://ifttt.com/phone_call/settings
- Press the Reconnect button on the bottom of the page
- Enter your phone number in the Phone Number field then press send PIN
- You will receive an automated phone call with a 4 digit PIN. Enter that PIN in the Pin field and select Update.
