As of October 2026, IFTTT uses a credit-based system to run Applets. Previously, different subscription tiers unlocked different features, such as access to specific services or the ability to use Applet features such as Filters and multiple Actions in an Applet.
With the credit-based system, all IFTTT tiers have access to all Applet features and services. The difference between Free, Starter, Pro, and Pro+ is primarily the number of credits included with each tier.

What are credits?
Credits are used to run Applets. Each time an Applet runs, its individual steps can consume credits. The number of credits used depends on which steps run successfully.
Here's a breakdown of what uses credits and what doesn't.
| Event | Uses credits? |
| A Trigger fires | Yes |
| An Action completes successfully | Yes |
| A Query returns successfully | Yes |
| A Filter runs successfully | Yes |
| An MCP-initiated Action runs successfully | Yes |
| Trigger polling that doesn't result in a Trigger event | No |
| An Action fails or is skipped | No |
| An Applet is turned off | No |
| Using IFTTT Chat | No |
| Creating or editing an Applet | No |
| An MCP call that doesn't result in an Action run | No |
How can I see how many credits an Applet will use?
Each step's credit cost is displayed in the Applet composer when creating an Applet using the Classic composer or enabling a published Applet.
When creating an Applet using IFTTT Chat, Chat can be asked to provide a breakdown of the credit cost for each step, so you can see how many credits your Applet will use each time it runs.

What happens if an Applet encounters an error or skips an Action?
Credits are only consumed by successful steps. If a step fails, it won't use credits. If you believe credits were deducted for a failed step, contact our support team for assistance.
Similarly, if a Filter skips an Action, you won't be charged for that skipped Action. However, any preceding steps that completed successfully still use credits.
For example, imagine you have an Applet that uses the Location service's You enter an area Trigger, followed by a Filter that runs the Applet’s Action after dark, and a LIFX Turn on light Action.
If you enter the area while it's still light outside, the Filter will skip the Action. The successful Trigger and Filter steps will use credits, but the skipped Action won't.
What happens when I run out of credits?
When you run out of credits, your Applets will be paused and won't run until your credits become available again.
You have two options to resume your Applets:
- Upgrade your subscription to a tier that includes more credits: Your upgrade takes effect immediately. Your Applets will unpause automatically, and no additional action is needed.
- Wait for your monthly credit reset: If you don't want to upgrade, your Applets will unpause when your credit balance resets.
Applets won't run events that occur while they're paused. Once your Applets resume, they'll run again for future events.
How will I know if I'm running low on credits?
We'll let you know if it looks like you're likely to run out of credits before your next monthly reset. You may see a notification on ifttt.com or within an Applet, and we may also send you an email to give you a heads-up.
Do unused credits roll over?
No. Unused credits don't roll over to the next month.
What happens to my credits if I downgrade my subscription?
If you downgrade to a lower tier, the change takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle. You'll retain your current credit allowance until then. At your next renewal, your credit allowance will update to reflect your new subscription tier.
